  • Victorian State Launch of PALZ

Friday the 13th 2017 held no fears for PALZ-Professionals with Alzheimer’s.

Hosted by CEO, Mr Mark Stone AM, the Board room of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was the venue for the state-wide launch of PALZ-Professionals with Alzheimer’s across Victoria.

MC David Mann OAM, of Mann Promotions, balanced the seriousness of the message of dementia, with caring and sensitive introductions of speakers during proceedings.

Attendees included representatives of Alzheimer’s Australia, Headspace, OC Connections, National Australia Bank, National Disability Insurance Scheme, BUPA, Rotary International, Halcyon Legal, Wheelton Group, and the Order of Australia Association.

Senior journalist Nick McCallum and his team from television’s Channel 7, were on hand to record the event, and the excellent story, which subsequently ran on the Channel 7 prime-time news, may be viewed here:

Speakers spoke on the structure of PALZ, the pilot group in Geelong, the importance of PALZ from a medical perspective, and the unexpected benefits to the speakers.  John Roth crystallised the importance of PALZ to those who had come from high-achieving backgrounds, such as he had, when he spoke of his personal experiences of the profound loss of dignity and self-respect.

Mr Mark Stone AM then announced to attendees that the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, would assist in providing invaluable Board room experiences, and corporate speakers, for the upcoming Melbourne-based PALZ group.

Board members Jodi Heath, Tony Still, and Jason Trethowan, distributed the first PALZ Annual Report, kindly printed by supporters Geelong Printing, whilst Chairman Cathy Roth OAM, thanked all in attendance, and presented framed PALZ Certificates of Appreciation to MC David Mann OAM and to the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry through the CEO Mark Stone AM.

  • PALZ Official Launch a Success!

    PALZ Official Launch

The date was Tuesday, November 8, 2016.  The time was 10am.  The warm Spring sun streamed into the meeting room at Bupa’s East Geelong facility, as both community and corporate representatives mingled over morning tea. They were there for the official launch of PALZ – Professionals with Alzheimer’s.

An informative power-point presentation by MC and Board member, Jason Trethowan, national CEO of Headspace, outlined the need for an organisation to provide a social and intellectually stimulating environment for those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, or similar disease.

Dr John Roth, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease a year ago, spoke of the impacts the disease brought both professionally and within society generally.  His powerful message was incredibly moving.  His words reinforced the need for an organisation, such as PALZ, to provide an intellectually and socially stimulating environment.  He spoke of how it would enable retention of self-respect and dignity, and longer and greater independence.

PALZ Chairman, Mrs Cathy Roth OAM, outlined the evolution of PALZ and acknowledged the incredible support by many people, including family who had travelled from interstate and overseas, to attend the launch.

Board members Jason Trethowan MBA, Tony Still MBA, and Jodi Heath MBA were introduced.

At this point the exciting news that Associate Professor Michael Woodward AM, a world-acclaimed expert in Alzheimer’s Disease, had agreed to be Patron, was announced.

Sponsors and supporters were acknowledged and officially thanked by the Board, and presented with a framed certificate of appreciation.   A number of those, who could not attend, have requested follow-up information.

    Presentations were made to:

BUPA with special acknowledgement of Ms Jannie Piercy, and Ms Heather McKibbin

The Geelong Advertiser and a special presentation to journalist Mr Danny Lannen

Harwood Andrews and a special presentation to Mr Dan Simmonds

    Alzheimer’s Australia

    K-Rock and Bay FM

    Geelong Printing

    Pace Advertising

Order of Australia Association – Victorian Branch

    Rotary Club of Geelong Central

    Austin Hospital Cognitive Research Unit

The final message of the launch was that Alzheimer’s Disease, and similar diseases, are not just Geelong problems – they are world problems.  PALZ will launch in Geelong but will roll out across Australia, and the world, providing dignity and support to the increasing numbers who need it.
